McCaala's Study Abroad Opportunity: LSU at Cannes

Donation protected
Hi, family, friends, and acquaintances!

My name is McCaala Nelson, and I am a junior at Louisiana State University studying public relations in the Manship School of Mass Communication. This year, I've been afforded the opportunity to travel to Cannes, France to attend the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity with the Manship School.

Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity is a festival that explores the value of creativity in branded communication: from product and service development to the creative strategy, execution and impact. LSU at Cannes is a two-week study abroad program that will allow for an immersive experience in public relations and advertising. The Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity has been bringing the creative communications industry together every year at its one-of-a-kind event in Cannes to learn, network and celebrate.

Since I chose my career when starting at LSU, my dream was always to travel the world while doing what I love as well as what I'm good at. In today’s times, as well as my field, it is especially important to experience different places and cultures to be aware of the world beyond yours. The possibility of traveling to Cannes, France would help to create meaningful connections as communicators and creatives, as well as contribute to my growth as a global citizen. Cannes Lions would provide me with many opportunities and experiences that are needed to excel in my post-graduate career!

One of the flaws of many study abroad programs is the lack of diversity, mostly seen in African American students. According to NAFSA Association of International Educators, only 13.7 percent of the students who study abroad annually are African American. I chose this program because not only will this continue to cultivate several skills, but this is an experience that many of my peers may never experience.    I would like to serve as a testimony to what opportunities can come from taking this trip with the Manship School. When I was presented with this opportunity, I knew that it was a necessary part of my journey as a future public relations expert, and a woman of color.

This study abroad program will cost $6625 in total. I'm looking to raise money to cover program and tuition cost, travel, passes to the Cannes Festival, and any other necessary materials. I appreciate any contributions, no matter the size. This experience will help mold me professionally and individually, as this is a once in a lifetime opportunity & experience! Thank you all for always being so supportive in each of my endeavors.
