Mr. McBrien's Beat Cancer Fund

There is a point in everyone’s life where we reflect back on our grade school years and think of the many teachers we’ve had. There is always one special teacher – one that not only inspires, nurtures, and coaches, but also connects with us in a unique and memorable way. Can you name that special teacher to you? For many students in the city of Irvine, both current and former, the answer is simple: Mr. Brendan McBrien.

For more than 25 years, Mr. McBrien has taught life lessons to middle and high school students at Irvine Unified (IUSD) every time he picks ups his baton. His orchestras and bands have consistently earned the highest ratings from the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association. In 2013, Mr. McBrien was the recipient of the Middle School Teacher of the Year award in the Irvine Unified School District.


Last year, Mr. McBrien was diagnosed with prostate cancer. With confidence, vigor, and determination, he approached it as just another life challenge and beat it! Unfortunately, a  week ago, Mr. McBrien learned that he has slow-growing, malignant tumor in his jaw that needs to be removed through a complicated surgery known as a Mandibular Flap. This 12 hour surgery will require Mr. McBrien to be away from what he loves most: teaching his students life lessons through music. His unwavering support, generosity, encouragement, integrity, dedication, and love have been and will continue to be the foundation of every friendship he builds with his students.

I hope we, both current and former students, can unite and help Mr. McBrien beat cancer again! I am sincerely asking you for help to offset Mr. McBrien's medical expenses. Any amount that you can give to support Mr. McBrien and his wonderful family would be much appreciated.
