Machu Picchu trek in memory of Allan Hall

My name is Carrie and myself and my partner Dan will be completing 10-day challenge in Peru with Eden Valley Hospice in memory of my dad Allan Hall. Our goal is to raise £4000 for Eden Valley Hospice as a thank you for the amazing care and support they gave towards my dad and our family at the end of his life.

My dad was diagnosed with cancer in October 2020 and fought with the most commendable attitude and positivity, continuously praised by medical staff and those that knew him. We are all immensely proud of him and the courage and strength he held throughout his illness. My Dad embraced life full hearted and was a dedicated musician and has always provided encouragement and inspiration for us to achieve, pursue the things we love and most importantly, to be kind.

Throughout his treatment he was supported by the incredible staff at Eden Valley Hospice in Carlisle. Eden Valley provided outstanding end of life care and attentiveness for my dad; helping him play drums at his final gig with his band 9 days before he passed away.
Without this support, he would not have been able to achieve this, an immensely sentimental moment for my dad, myself, our family, his friends, band members and the community.

What makes Eden Valley special is the selfless staff who compassionately provide care for those who need it most. Our family and friends experienced first-hand the attentive nature and support off the whole staff when we needed it most. They gave us the opportunity to have those final moments and special conversations together in a safe and peaceful environment.

Further to this, Jigsaw, Cumbria’s Children’s Hospice provides one to one care for children and young adults with life limiting illness, providing a home-from-home environment allowing staff to match children and young adults home routine as closely as possible ensuring a smooth, relaxing, and peaceful transition between the home and hospice environments.

Together Eden Valley and Jigsaw are an indispensable facility and it's critical that their work is recognised and their outstanding contribution to providing care is supported. It costs £3.9 million a year to provide care for those with life limiting illness, or individuals who need palliative care and Eden Valley Charity are responsible for fundraising the first £3million of those costs independently.

2021 is significant year for Jigsaw and Eden Valley. It marks three decades of care for individuals with limiting illness. The staff have remained a constant source of support to those individuals and their families during difficult times and it has been made possible thanks to the support of fundraising and donations. To celebrate this fantastic achievement Eden Valley are running some special fundraising events including Trek Peru.

And so, we want to give a little back to help Eden Valley. In October 2022, we will join Eden Valley for a 10-day challenge in Peru. We will spend this time trekking to Machu Picchu, a challenging hike with altitudes of up to 4,630m. This will require adequate training on top of fundraising, something we plan to take head on, just like my dad did throughout his illness. Our goal is to raise £4000 for the charity through fundraising. In addition, we will fund all expenses and give a significant donation ourselves.
