My beautiful, big-hearted 46-year-old cousin Stephanie Tiedeman-Bates -- a married mother of three and special education program aide in Concord, NH, was recently diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) a.k.a. Lou Gehrig’s Disease.
ALS is devastating. It slowly and steadily destroys the neurons that control the body’s voluntary muscles. ALS brings weakness, then paralysis, then death. It is terminal and currently there is no cure.
Stephanie has been given a very frightening 3-5 years to live. Over that time, Stephanie’s strength will deteriorate; she will lose mobility of her arms and legs, the ability to swallow and speak, and finally, the ability to breath. She has already lost partial use of her right arm and is beginning to feel tingling in her left arm and her right leg – a sign that damage to these neurons has already begun.
As her ALS progresses, Stephanie will need a cane, then a walker, then a wheelchair. She’ll need to alter her home for accessibility, require equipment for eating and physical therapy, ventilators for breathing, and home health aides to assist her in all daily tasks. All of that costs much more than a special-education aide can afford.
