Mayor Thomas M. McDermott, Jr. will be getting his head shaved to raise funds to help Ariyana Alaimo’s family deal with her overwhelming medical costs. If Ariyana is feeling up to it, Mayor McDermott will allow her to make the first cut of his hair. The Mayor met Ariyana last year and was impressed and inspired by her strength and outgoing personality. He is challenging everyone to open their hearts and donate to the Alaimo family.
Ariyana Alaimo, a 5th grade student at Harding Elementary School is battling cancer. She was diagnosed with Leukemia on October 3, 2019 just 4 days before her 10th birthday. Ariyana underwent intense Chemo from December, 2019 to May, 2020. Now she has chemo treatments every day. Every Wednesday, she is given an additional chemo treatment along with the daily treatments.
Every 12 weeks, she must undergo a lumbar puncture where spinal fluid is withdrawn from the spine to test if the leukemia has entered into the spine. Along with the lumbar puncture, she receives chemo in the spine. This treatment lasts for a year and a half which takes her to December of 2021.
Ariyana has had many surgeries with the most recent being the removal of her gallbladder due to the chemo treatments. There are times when she is unable to have her chemo treatments due to a high belirubin count and the effect it has on her liver.
Ariyana is a strong, fun loving and outgoing individual. Even on her worse days, her baby brother can always get her to smile. She loves her equestrian therapy, being a Vipers cheerleader, “Girls on the Run” and barbies.
