For Mayira: A Lifeline After FFS & Job Insecurity

Hi loved ones,

Today, I'm reaching out on behalf of my life partner and best friend of over 5 years, and our dear friend- Mayira Batista. Mayira is an incredible, resilient human being who, in addition to navigating life as a Black, Indigenous, Disabled, NB Trans Woman, is now facing a month of recovery following Facial Feminization Surgery (FFS). She’s waited patiently for this surgery through the tedious and lengthy provider queues and even through a renegotiation of her surgeon’s Medi-Cal contract. As many of you in our community know, this isn't just a surgery, but a monumental step in her journey to live authentically.

1 year after her first scheduled surgery date (delayed bc of bureaucracy & transphobia); it’s finally Mayira’s turn to access this lifesaving and critical gender confirmation procedure! While this step is crucial for her, it also brings along a wave of challenges. Physically, emotionally, and - let's not beat around the bush - financially.

The reality is that Mayira will be out of work for a month. This wouldn't be a problem if her job respected her rights, but it’s become clear they don't. There's been an ongoing trend of ableism and racism at her workplace, and extended medical leaves have conveniently become a way to let people go. It's cruel, but that's what she's dealing with.

So, we're stepping in. We're stepping up. We're asking for you to join us in supporting Mayira during this difficult time. We need to secure her financial stability while she's healing and standing up against job discrimination. Mayira is a fucking pillar in this community and it’s about time she gets her flowers.

Our goal is $8,000. It’s not a small amount, but it's what she needs.

Here’s the $$ breakdown of our fundraising goal to support Mayira (for thirty days plus a financial cushion):

-Nutritious Meal Delivery: $2,700

-Rent: $800

-Utilities: $150

-Lost wages: $1,200

-Essential ergonomic sleep supplies: $250

-Medical supplies: $250

-Dog & Cat food: $150

-Dog Sitting/Walking: $350

And let's not forget about a safety net. The remaining $2,150 is for a 'just in case' savings cushion. If her job (very likely) does decide to play dirty, this will be her parachute.
