Mayflower’s Medical Care

Mayflower

This is Mayflower, she is our sweet, lovable 7 year old Labrador retriever. May is typically a high energy dog and an absolute food magnet. Unfortunately, this post is one where we have to ask for help (something we hate to do).
Mayflower, earlier this month had started to show disinterest in her food. We tried to get creative by switching her diet around to see if that would help. For a few days this worked and May would eat minimal amounts, but soon after she became completely turned off to food. We took her to the vet where she had a full work up done and it was presumed she had some type of virus or infection. May was sent home on antibiotics and we were hopeful we’d see a turn around in her behavior. After just a few days, Mayflower stopped eating all together, taking her pills and spiked a temperature of 105 (which is high for both humans and dogs). We brought her back to the animal hospital where she has now been admitted for well over a week. Mayflower had lost significant weight at this point because she was not tolerating food there either. We were told after further work up May’s blood liver levels were high and that the next step in her suggested treatment would be a liver biopsy as well as feeding tube placement. The liver biopsy would be able to tell us if we were looking at liver cancer or a severe hepatitis. We love our girl so much and would go to the ends of the earth for her, so the obvious choice was to move forward and get her nutrition and answers. During and after surgery we had received phone calls informing us that Mayflower had experienced some complications. May as of right now, is in the ICU and getting a high level of care. She has a central IV line, urinary catheter, esophageal feeding tube and is still on oxygen. Our strong girl is progressing but will need an unknown number of days in the hospital to recover.
Again, we hate to do this and are not the people who usually ask for help but the medical bills are getting increasingly high. If you would like to help, anything at all is much appreciated by Mayflower and her parents! Thank you for reading our strong girl’s story!
