Max's medical bills

Donation protected

I rescued max in December from a guy who didnt have the time to give max the care and attention he required. When I got max he barely weighed 12 pounds. The guy told me he was given to him by the breeder because he was the runt and wasn't worth selling. Turns out that wasnt tbe truth. After a lot of research I discovered mega esophagus and all the symptoms were spot on with what max was doing. I found a support group on Facebook and immediately started asking about max's symptoms and what to do. Everyone on there was and still is so amazingly supportive and helpful. I ended up coming into contact with a girl who had gotten maxs brother from a previois litter that had megaesophagus and myasthenia gravis. The breeder was contacted about these diseases and told not to breed their dogs again. Well a year later we have max and a breeder who claims to know nothing of it. I bought grain free canned puppy food and would put it up on a chair so max would have to stand up to eat.(dogs with mega esophagus have to eat elevated so gravity can pull the food to their stomach). After I knew this methods was working I took max to Colyer vet service. Max was seen by a vet that only sees knew puppy patients. She told my my diagnoses on max was more than likely correct. She told me he would not have a good prognosis and there was nothing I could do. Max also had been breathing really strange and dogs with ME can get pneumonia really easily so she gave max an antibiotic shot for that and sent us on our way. A week later max's breathing had not improved at all. I took him back in and was seen by colyer himself. He did some x-rays and a barium swollow on max. Max did not have pneumonia but did have something called praa. I never thought anything of it before because max was keeping wet food down so I thought there was no way he could have that. Praa(persistent right aortic arch) is a ring of blood vessels that are wrapped around the esophagus that is supposed to dissolve when puppies are born. In max's case it did not and cause solid foods to get stuck and stretch out his esophagus causing ME. I was devastated when I found out max had this. Knowing that there was absolutely no way I could come up with the 4 grand for max's surgery I created a Gofundme. That gave me hope so I contacted colyer again and said I wanted to go ahead and go through with the surgery. I thought I was going to have to go to uc Davis for it but colyer discovered for me that valley oak can do it. Relieved I called and scheduled the surgery. When the actual estimate came I applied for carecredit over and over again. Do to the fact that I have no credit and recently moved out on my own I was denied. Stuck with a extremely difficult situation I started contacting organization asking for help. All of them were very willing to take max in and get him the surgery but would then rehome him and I would not be aloud to see or know about him. Heartbroken with that news I started looking into what the best choice would be for max. Thank god for my wonderful parents who surprised me by applying for carecredit and getting approved. They know how much max means to me and how crushed I'd be to have to give him up. Thanks to them I was able to get max his surgery and just make monthly payments to them. After max's surgery was pretty rough for the first few days. I couldn't get max to eat the meatballs I was told to feed him and I couldn't keep him calm. Finally we got into a routine and max now eats the same he had before his surgery. He eats a slurry of chi ken, sweet potatoes, carrots, rice, water, chicken broth, and puppy chow. I blend all that up and feed it to max elevated 4 times a day. I no longer need to hold max up for any longer than 3 minutes after he eats. Before the surgery it wa 30-40 minutes of holding him up to make sure the food got to his stomach. He also breaths a lot better now. We believe that the ring anomaly and all the regurgitation was effecting max's breathing. He still had loud breathing but it is no long labored and he doesn't gasped for air. I don't know if max will ever be a normal dog, but he sure has a much better prognosis than we ever imagined. I believe it is because max is such a fighter and has such a great will to live. He is the happiest, sweetest puppy I've ever came across. Our knew battle with max is that we believe he has the neuromuscular disease (myasthenia Gravis ) that his brother has. We haven't got a diagnoses yet but are hoping for one soon so we can start max on the medication. It seems to be one thing after other but it as all so worth it for this sweet boy. Max is now almost 22 pounds. He has gained a lot of weight and muscle since I took him in only two months ago. Max is now battling a serious case of aspiration pneumonia. He's losing some weight and has been going into the vet non stop. I actually ended losing my job because of all the vet trips I've had to do for max. So we are desperate for any donation to pay off max's vet bills. Anything helps!
