Our emergency started on Saturday morning. Upon waking up, I always take Max out to go potty. He couldn't walk very good. One leg in the front seemed weak and one leg (on the opposite side) in the back was weak and he was trembling and sort of stiff. I carried him outside and he went potty. We came back in and I looked at his paws, thinking maybe something was stuck inbetween his pads. He was very lethargic. :-( I began to think he maybe slipped a disk in his back as this is a common injury for Daschshund's and he is quite a runner and jumper. I called his regular vet but they couldn't get him in. A few hours later he threw up brown fluid...lots and lots of it. Amazingly, he began to walk a little better. I spent the morning trying to figure out what possibly could have happened. I saw an empty chocolate bar wrapper and wondered if he had some? Chocolate is toxic for dogs and after the brown vomit, I thought that's what is probably was. I took him to the emergency vet (Nor Cal Veterinary Emergency and Specialty in Daly City, Ca) as he was not getting better (walking better though) but very lethargic and shallow breathing. His eyes weren't focusing well. He wouldn't eat or drink. They took him back immediately to check vitals. I gave permission for 800.00 worth of emergency assessment (xrays, blood, urine and fluids). Xrays revealed that his left lung was was completely full of fluid and his blood work indicated that is white blood cell count was incredibly low. They said he needed oxygen, nebulizers, IV, antibotics as as start. He has pheumonia. :-( . Thankfully, my brother and his wife leant me 3500.00 as the estimate for his care is between 3019.18 (low end) and 4,492.00 (high end) and I had to provide the midpoint amount before they would treat. I left him there with $3900.00. I called this morning (approximatley 12 hours after he has been there) and he is breathing better but has blood tinged fluid coming out of his nose. I really will need help paying this vet bill (paying back my brother and his wife) as I don't have that kind of money saved. If you can help at all, I (and Max) would be incredibly appreciative. Max means the world to me, I love him so very very much.
