Maximus' Mission to Serve Everyone Through Innovation

Hi, my name is Maximus Maldonado, and I am incredibly grateful for the opportunities that have shaped my life. Now, I want to use what I’ve been given to create something meaningful—technology that helps people, not just those who can afford it, but everyone who needs it.
Growing up in the Bronx, my family knew struggle, but we also knew perseverance. Through their sacrifices, I was able to attend Fordham Prep, where I developed both as a scholar and as a "Man for Others." That foundation instilled in me the belief that success is not just about personal achievement—it’s about lifting others up.
That belief has fueled my journey. I recently graduated with distinction in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Virginia, earning a place in the International Mechanical Engineering Honors Society. During my time there, I created a low-cost lower limb exoskeleton that assists with sitting and standing movements—an invention that was later published. It was a moment that reinforced my passion for engineering, but it also opened my eyes to a harsh reality: the very people who need life-changing technology the most are often the ones who can’t afford it.
As both an athlete and an engineer, I’ve seen firsthand how companies prioritize rehabilitation over injury prevention, overcharging thousands of dollars for treatments while neglecting the opportunity to stop injuries before they happen. Innovation should not be a privilege—it should be a right. My goal is to develop cutting-edge technology that enhances mobility, prevents injuries, and improves quality of life for all individuals—not just those with financial means.
But to truly make a difference, I need to understand more than just the engineering. I need to understand the business side of innovation—how to bring ideas to life in a way that is both sustainable and accessible. That’s why I have been accepted into the Master of Science in Commerce program at UVA, specializing in Biotechnology. This program will allow me to merge my engineering expertise with a strong business foundation, giving me the tools to create real, lasting impact. However, as a first-generation, low-income student, taking this next step comes with financial challenges.
To support myself, I’ve taken on three jobs: coaching baseball, training clients in fitness, and mentoring a young boy in need of guidance. Giving back has always been at the heart of who I am. From volunteering at Castle Hill Little League to coaching high school baseball, I have seen the power of mentorship and the importance of having someone believe in you. I want to continue making a difference, not just through coaching, but through the technology I create—technology that empowers people and makes their lives better.
I know I can't do this alone. If you believe in making innovation more accessible, in supporting first-generation students, and in creating a world where success is measured by impact rather than profit, I would be deeply grateful for your support. Every contribution, big or small, brings me one step closer to making this dream a reality.
Thank you for taking the time to read my story, for believing in me, and for being part of something bigger. I hope to one day pay this kindness forward and make a lasting difference in the lives of others.
With gratitude,
