On February 25th, 2023 we noticed that Max was favoring one leg and moving around less and whining at a higher-than-normal pitch. After visits with a growing team of three doctors, Max's diagnosis is ruptured ligaments in his knees. There is not much research available for his diagnosis, so the treatments we are exploring to help Max will also help vets gain more knowledge about alpaca care and recovery. If we can raise the funds, we hope to get Max fitted for leg braces to give his knees some stability. The medical cost including vet bills and the braces is only an estimate as this has not been done for alpacas. The brace company estimates that it will cost around $1,000 per leg brace and another $1,000 or more for medical care Max will need.
