Mawenzi Primary School Fundraiser

This charitable project aims to raise funds to purchase needed school supplies and office equipment for the students and faculty of Mawenzi Primary School in Moshi, Tanzania. The school currently serves a total of 876 students enrolled in preschool to Class 7, ages 4-13.

I was inspired to launch this fundraiser after my family's first visit to Moshi and the school in 2010. Throughout my life, my mother, a former student at Mawenzi Primary School, often shared memories of her time attending in the 1950-60s. Her nostalgia for those early years and that of Mawenzi alumni around the world remains steadfast. Many families that were a part of the Indian East African diaspora attended schools like this one, providing the educational groundwork they needed to succeed. Appreciation for a formative era in my and other families' histories has shaped profound gratitude for this institution.

Former students and generations of youth whose parents or grandparents claim beginnings in this special place at the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro are encouraged to spread the message about the fundraiser. We hope to reach our goal of $5,000 and give back to this historic center of learning. In doing so, we honor our past and help facilitate a future for current students and teachers striving to live out their dreams each day.

*All funds from this charity will go towards purchasing school supplies from local Tanzanian businesses and hand-delivered to staff and students. Photos and video footage of the event will be published online. We kindly request that all donations be made by November 10, 2022.
