Resilient, courageous and *out-of-the-box*, he's a distinct character with dramatic flair and a friendly, tender-heart, embodying deep philosophies, honest expression and a colourful imagination. He laughs and cries with unabashed nostalgia, upholds core values in the face of adversity and states truth with a distinct and memorable vocal cadence.

A freeform dancer, wily clown, prolific poet and dynamic stage actor. A forthright ally, amorous partner, tender nature-lover and affectionate friend extraordinaire. Uncle to many, brother to three and former teaching assistant to generations of differently-abled students, Maury leaves his playful, indelible mark-of-joyspark spontaneously, without pretence, engendering loyalty in all those who consider him *true kin*. 

You know who you are.......and you know he would walk the full, meandering mile with you in your *hour of need* (as long as he didn't need to be punctual). ;)

In September, 2024 Maury's overall health plummeted into a concerning phase of rapid decline. The sudden and persistent presentation of neurological and CNS symptoms prompted an ER visit for a run of medical-diagnostic tests.

All returned back "normal" so the hospitalist doctor prematurely concluded it was "likely" the beginning of Maury's age-related and progressive cognitive decline.

Case (apparently) closed. 

The complexity of Maury's acute symptoms and their sudden onset didn't match such a slapdash conclusion, so a second opinion was sought with a reputable Doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Dr. Christopher Yam, who specializes in live blood analysis. A wide range of perplexing, debilitating symptoms categorized in TCM as *intestinal permeability* mildly improved and stabilized over the winter with Dr. Yam's targeted healing approach. In conjunction with regular acupuncture treatments, Maury seemed to be slowly on the mend.

By Spring 2025, the more debilitating symptoms persisted enough for Maury to consult local Naturopathic Physician, Dr. Kyle Maynard. Dr. Kyle has a Masters of Science degree in neuroscience (UBC) and requested a release of all the labs and scans from Royal Jubilee Hospital. His astute analysis concluded that the primary root cause of Maury's continued exhaustion, sleep disruption and speech delay is *chronic venous insufficiency* (CVI) due to the network of severe varicose veins spanning through both legs.

Dr. Kyle also claims the CVI has impacted the Broca's area of Maury's brain. This is the region in the frontal lobe of the dominant brain hemisphere linked to speech production and language processing. Dr. Kyle identified a mild degree of *white matter* in the Broca's area of the scan causing a manageable condition known as *Broca's Aphasia*.

Further, Maury's CVI causes *stasis dermatitis* to present as severe skin injury to his feet, ankles and lower limbs. This stasis, caused by poor blood flow back to the heart, pools waste product and toxins in the extremities which cause inflammation, lesions and severe dryness. Stasis dermatitis is beginning to present in both his hands now, too.

Dr. Kyle is confident that with a targeted, contextual approach toward improving Maury's cardio-vascular system while addressing his varicosity and circulation, his brain health will continue to improve. He hopes to reverse the more disabling symptoms caused by CVI.

Maury's recovery and healing will be slow and steady, just like the turtle-medicine he carries as his totem. It will require an effective integrative, functional-medicine approach from a team of private healthcare professionals who specialize in the treatment and management of such complex, acute conditions. There is no *quick-fix* solution for the underlying conditions which have progressed over many decades of genetic predisposition.

We hope and pray Maury will be able to regain relative stability of his well-being once again. This is a 'long game', a hero's journey toward a level of personal health recovery that will ask for considerable resources of time, energy and money. It will require close attention and ongoing maintenance along with ample doses of self-love, caring affection and practical community support, such as this crowd-sourcing campaign.

Maury's dedicated partner of 9 + years has been providing the loving attention and full-time care required of the unpredictable, fluctuating terrain of his acute illness. The demands have been great upon her and their relationship, their small living environment, their shared finances. In order for her to continue to show up in her full capacity as a resourceful carer, she has had to redirect her focus and attention away from her own career ambitions. There has been considerable loss of income as a result.
