Maureen was recently diagnosed with Cholangiocarcinoma; a very aggressive cancer. Maureen underwent a 6 hour surgery on April 10, 2023 to remove the left side of her liver due to the intrahepatic duct being severely blocked as well as part of the common bile duct; due to a liver mass. Unfortunately; the liver surgeon was unable to remove the entire mass as it was growing on the hepatic artery. Maureen will start radiation to try and slow the progression of the mass that was unable to be removed, more of a palliative care treatment. There has been no data showing chemotherapy is a treatment for remission and/or cure. Patients with Cholangiocarcinoma that undergo Chemotherapy are very sick and it is brutal chemotherapy treatment option; that Maureen has decided not to undergo. Medical bills from being in ICU post operative a week in the hospital in October 2022 and a week post operative April 2023 multiple scans, procedures leading up to liver resection, deductible and out of pocket costs are adding up! Maureen was forced to retire from her position as a Registered Nurse Case Manager due to her diagnosis. Sadly, Maureen has a terminal cancer and have the best quality of life to spend with her family, her 4 grandchildren she adores, and her friends.
