Maui Nui Botanical Gardens is a public garden in Kahului, Maui that works to conserve Hawaiian plants and culture. We have an anonymous donor who has offered a $10,000 challenge grant - this means your donation to this campaign will be matched dollar for dollar if we can reach our $10K goal.
We are fundraising to support public educational programs, most of which are offered free to the community! This includes our first ever Lā ‘Ulu (Breadfruit Day) August 26 - a free event celebrating the harvest season for Hawaiian ‘ulu, kinolau of Kū, as a symbol of a provider’s kuleana for caring for and feeding his family.
We've received generous sponsorship from Ulupono Initiative and Maui Breadfruit Company. We still need money to pay cultural practitioners, and other event costs such as lua, entertainment and sound system, and crossing guards. We're excited that this will be a waste-free event by partnering with the Huliau Foundation!
By hiring local artisans, we can offer free hands-on activities and demonstrations to show the many sides of this iconic Hawaiian tree, such as 'ulu kapa making; papa ku‘i ai or poi making with 'ulu; Makahiki games like 'ulu maika; and maybe even 'ulu leaf kite making! Help us to make this an event to remember and support Hawaiian practitioners. All additional funds will help to grow our education program - to hire practitioners for Saturday cultural workshops - to pay for materials and staff time for visiting school groups - and keep inspiring the community to appreciate the native plants that make Hawai'i unique!
