Maui is a 6-year-old 50lb Australian Labradoodle and our family's very first dog. He quickly became more than just a pet to us, but a true member of our family.
On February 5th, my dad was taking Maui on his evening walk when Maui was severely attacked by another dog. The dog broke off leash from its' owner, ran across the street, and mauled Maui on the sidewalk. The owner of the dog and my dad forcefully pulled the dog off Maui but wasn't able to be contained and attacked Maui again. Around 6 of our neighbors heard Maui's cries and rushed out to help my Dad. David was finally able to free Maui from the other dog and immediately rushed him to the emergency Vet. Because of the severity of his injuries, he had to undergo an anesthetized wound care procedure and spend the night at the hospital.
His injuries included:
- A full-thickness laceration that split the left ear cartilage
- A puncture over the left neck
- Many punctures and lacerations over the left hind leg
The cartilage of the ear was trimmed where the edges were frayed and the remaining pieces were brought together, leaving it permanently altered. A single drain was also placed over the left thigh area due to pocketing.
3 days following the incident, my mom noticed a strong stench from Maui's wounded ear. He was taken back to the emergency vet where the doctor realized that the ear was infected and had to undergo another anesthetized wound care procedure.
Unfortunately, the financial burden has fallen on my parents. They have already been hit with over $3,500 in medical expenses, with more follow-up visits, removal of stitches, and post-trauma trainings ahead. They would never ask for help themselves, but I know how much this unexpected situation is weighing on them both emotionally and financially.
My brothers and I are hoping that with some donations, we can help my parents and Maui through this hard time. If you are able to donate, no matter the amount, please know that we greatly appreciate it and it does not go unnoticed. Every dollar goes directly toward Maui’s medical bills and recovery. If you’re unable to give, sharing this fundraiser would be just as meaningful.
Maui is the reason pets have a special place in our hearts. If you have had the chance to know and love Maui, you'd know he has a kind soul and energetic spirit.
Thank you all for your kindness, love, and support. It means so much to my family and especially to Maui as he heals.
With much love,
Carolina & Pablo
