Cecelia M. Matyjas Memorial for Women in STEM Scholarship

Cecelia "Sally" Matyjas (Sept 1942 - Oct 2024) was a Starpoint Central High School math teacher for 35 years from 1963-1998. Sally had a passion for teaching that began at a young age by tutoring fellow students in a one-room Pendleton, NY schoolhouse which she attended. She pursued that passion by attending Buffalo State University and earning a Master's degree in math education. Sally motivated and influenced multiple generations of math students in her 35-year career at Starpoint Central School, especially to overcome societal barriers for women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and stigmas associated with pursuing STEM careers. All three of Sally's sons have careers in a STEM field. As such, the family is creating this annual scholarship fund to be awarded to a high-achieving female Starpoint high school senior excelling in mathematics and pursuing a major in a STEM field. All funds will be sent directly to Starpoint Central School District.
