MS>MS: Music is a much-needed MS-free zone for our good buddy Matty Sheets. Creating art is a valuable routine that helps him combat the effects of living with multiple sclerosis. The diagnosis has changed his performing and writing style and inspired him to begin drawing and painting, following in the footsteps of his mother, an artist who has been living with MS for more than 25 years.

 

In the past few years, Matty has transitioned his focus from drums and guitar to the ukulele. He quickly fell in love with the versatility of the traditional instrument combined with his signature post-folk style. Check out the project video, where Matty explains in more detail why the ukulele is a great medium for him moving forward. He is excited to complete this project and share how his visual art and songwriting coincide with expressing gratitude for the life-giving community connections he treasures so much.

 

Matty considers the process of making music and art to be a gift to his future self. These practices rewire neural pathways in the brain and are incredibly regenerative for someone living with MS, a disease that produces lesions that interfere with critical neurological connections. By supporting Matty's art, we are not only assisting with living expenses while his disability case is pending, but also directly contributing to his health, wellbeing, and neuroplasticity.
