Matt's Cancer Fight

Donation protected
Dear Friends, Family, and Supporters,

Just a short while ago, Matt underwent what should have been a routine appendectomy on July 29th, but life had other plans for him. A few days later, the surgeon delivered unexpected news: a cancerous tumor had been found on his appendix. The good news is that the tumor was successfully removed. However, given Matt's condition, medical experts have identified cancer extending past the margin of appendix removal, indicating that cancer has spread to the adjacent colon area. His diagnosis is currently classified as Stage 4 Mucinous Adenocarcinoma of the Appendix.

He has since undergone exploratory surgery on August 16th, in which his team at OHSU confirmed that there is peritoneal disease where his appendix was—in other words, his particular mucinous cancer still appears to be localized in the appendix region. Matt's doctor is hopeful that this smaller volume of peritoneal disease hasn't spread beyond this area, but she has recommended chemotherapy as the first step of treatment to ensure that this doesn't have a chance to grow to the lymph nodes and beyond. Matt is about to embark on a year-long journey, including back-to-back chemotherapy cycles with a major surgery in between—this procedure will entail removal of the right side of his colon, as well as any surrounding areas impacted by peritoneal disease.

We're reaching out to you because you've touched Matt's life, leaving an indelible mark. With your support, we're confident we can overcome the challenges that lie ahead and help enable Matt to return to life with renewed vigor. We're taking this uncertain journey one day at a time, sharing updates along the way, and with conviction that we'll emerge stronger on the other side. In just these two wild weeks, we've been heartened by the overwhelming love and kindness pouring in from our community—so thank you for continuing to shine light in our direction.

Although this is a health challenge, first and foremost, we're also up against a financial challenge. Matt is lucky to have a supportive employer, who has encouraged him to take a leave of absence and focus on himself. Even with short term disability assistance, Matt is now faced with full responsibility for the speciality, out-of-network costs at OHSU. Not only are we looking at a year of growing medical fees, but we're also approaching a year of immense financial toll on Matt's daily cost of living. The combination of bills so far received and the upcoming costs for hospital visits, surgeries and ongoing treatment are uncertain but mounting. We're doing everything we can on our own, but it's just not financially possible. We humbly need your help please, big or small.

Under the guidance of the esteemed Gastrointestinal Cancer team at OHSU, Matt is in the best hands. He continues to navigate the complex healthcare system with remarkable resilience and optimism. As you offer your encouragement, keep those positive vibes flowing. All signs point to Matt triumphing over this life hurdle.

Matt's unwavering commitment to authenticity compels us to share his story openly. We encourage you to spread the word within your circles, as awareness and unity can truly make a difference. As we march forward, we eagerly anticipate sharing the positive updates that are bound to follow.

You all know Matt is such a fundamental part of his community, an incredible person of character, and someone that gives back without question. Now it's our time to give back to him.
