Mattis Fritz Recovery: Transverse Myelitis
On April 30th, Mattis awoke from his morning nap paralyzed from the waist down. He was admitted to Children’s Hospital Intensive Care Unit where he was diagnosed with Transverse Myelitis; a rare neurological disorder that causes inflammation in the spinal cord resulting in paralysis and loss of motor functions. The disorder also compromised his respiratory function which lead to him being intubated for a month. Mattis is now recovering at Franciscan Children’s Hospital in Brighton. Through daily physical and occupational therapy, he is working hard every day towards regaining strength back, which will also include relearning how to walk.
Anyone who knows Mattis can attest to his passion for sports, especially hockey! Seeing him struggle to move has taken an immense toll on those who love him, but he still manages to find a reason to smile every single day.
The Fritz family is extremely grateful for all the care and well wishes they have received during this difficult time and for all the ongoing support.
Funds are being raised to support his medical costs and family while in recovery. Mattis comes from a family of first responders and veterans.
