Matthew Wares Road to Recovery….again'

Hello, my name is Matthew Ware, and I am a 41 year old quadriplegic. I am not your normal quadriplegic because I have some movement in both arms. I do not have any hand or finger movement, but I do have feeling all over.  I’m raising money to purchase an at home hospital bed that will help prevent the majority of bedsores.   Bedsores are, without exaggeration, a life-threatening issue for people like me.  Given how serious mine were, one nurse told me she thought I wasn’t going to make it.  Despite surgeries and procedures, none of them have healed 100% but still have had great progress! Therapists and surgeons have highly recommended a special type of bed ( that can help prevent future sores and assist with the healing of the sores that I have. It is called an air fluidized therapy, hospital bed (. Laying on the bed there is very little to no pressure on my body. The specialized mattress reduces friction, controls moisture, and redistributes pressure replicating the effects of floating in water. This chapter of my story started July 2021 when I started going to the St. Vincent outpatient wound care. I had a total of six severe bedsores.  I've spent this past year and a half on bedrest voluntarily, and involuntarily. I say that because I was prescribed bedrest to recover after I had surgeries. The voluntary bedrest was because my hip was broken at the time and was too painful to sit on! Not being able to spend time in my chair cost me a lot . I have lost quite a bit of strength and range and motion and I even lost my job! I have missed trips, events from thanksgivings, Christmases, birthdays, and time with my family and friends. The biggest loss was me not being able to spend time with my mother before she passed almost in November of 2021! My medicaid insurance will not cover the bed because they view it as a preventative measure, and not a need. The crazy thing is, the mattress that they did approve I got a bed sore from! They only provide a proper mattress if you have stage 3-4 bedsores. This  means the sores are so deep that your bones are exposed. My hip, shoulder and tail bone were all visible! I just had a two-part surgery for four hours with a trauma orthopedic surgeon and a plastic surgeon on February 9 to repair my hip, cover it with muscle, and debreed my tailbone, which had the infection MRSA in it.  By doctors orders, I am renting the air fluidized therapy bed which is $3000 a month. This is expensive but well worth it. The beds cost $50,000 and up!  I am supposed to be on bedrest for a month with a couple weeks left. Having this bed at home would help me heal and sustain a more active, less painful life. Any additional money will be put towards doctor bills.
