Matthew Mushlin's Cancer Fighting BattlePlan

Let me express my sincere gratitude to you for taking the time to read my words about Matthew Mushlin and share his story. Especially now when we find ourselves in a unique time of the world.
Matthew is at this time in need of help from family, friends, associates, and kind-hearted souls like you!
Many of you didn't know it until a few days ago Matthew rushed to the ER for emergency surgery to open his airway last week. This was due to infection, swelling, and complications from his prior treatments.
You also may not have known he's been silently fighting throat cancer and completing radiation treatments 5 days a week for almost 7 weeks straight. He did all of this without telling the majority of the people he knows. He didn't want to burden anyone with his story, as we all experience our own unique hard times.
Last Friday, Matthew was rushed to the ER with difficulty breathing and having thought it was an allergic reaction to his medication. He's been in the ICU since January 15th, 2021, first on a ventilator, then with a breathing tube, after receiving same-day emergency surgery to open his airway and complete a biopsy.
He has a fresh new scar across his neck and a feeding tube down his nose, and he's experiencing all new types of pain he hasn't experienced before. He's frequently being woken up, poked, prodded, inspected, talked about, and kept away from family visitors. Still, he is exhausted, wishing he could get some rest, but he is determined to recover.
He's praying for the news that his voice will be saved, that he may keep his vocal cords and be able to share even more with each of you at the end of this still long journey ahead. We all await the answers from the surgeon on how this latest biopsy has gone, and your prayers are certainly welcome.
In fact, as of this morning on January 20th, 2021, he gave me an update in his own words:
"Pain still rather dramatic, but @ least the meds help, every 2 hours, so grateful they found something that can help.
One of the things they do to get ya back on your feet & eating is called a Barium Test. They try different consistency foods, and a radiologist reads it to determine if you can eat or drink.
I got the significant "NO FOOD, NO DRINK" within seconds of that test.
Instead of being fed through a tube from my nose, I'll have to have a surgical procedure tomorrow for a device placed in my stomach to help me eat, so that's something else to learn new.
Whatever needs to be done, that's what I'm going to do! I've too much to do yet, so I certainly won't slow down now." and with those words, this is who we know Matthew to be, a fighter in pursuit of doing it takes to bring him back to a full recovery.
I'm not sure how insurance works regarding costs, yet, a new fiscal year in the insurance world means a new reset for out-of-pocket expenses.
Items like deductibles, co-pays, hospital room-stays, scans, tests, feeding tube and breathing machines, monitors, nurses, pain meds, additional surgeries... well, it's a bit mind-boggling as I even write this.
But this happening during a global pandemic of rising costs and extra medical safety procedures required makes the bills shoot higher. We hope to raise $40,000- $50,000 to cover this recent set of emergency procedures and those yet to come. We fear costs could quickly approach $100,000 or more due to his extended stay and this new feeding tube surgery he learned about yesterday.
Many of you know Matthew Mushlin as a friend, a co-worker, an associate, a Dog-Father, a strong-hearted soul spilling over with endless amounts of energy and optimistic enthusiasm in support of each of us.
Of those who get to know Matthew, 5 calls him our brother, and 2 calls him his son. We've intimately seen, heard, experienced, and witnessed the qualities that molded Matthew into the man he is today. We see how he shares his great attributes with others and handles what life throws his way.
When we look upon our own lives, what it took to get us where we are today, we too should look back and realize we climbed millions of challenging mountain terrain to say that we've survived so far.
We didn't do it on our own; it usually took the kindness and help from others at truly needed times to overcome those challenges we faced along the way.
My hope is that each of us remembers our motivators, pushers, coaches, listeners, and witnesses in life with fondness. Knowing if the time came, we too would step to the plate and help back if ever needed.
I hope each of you feels as I do, that Matthew is one of those souls that is designed to motivate and inspire to best out of each of us. Life demands we take the right path with the right people to be prepared for what lies ahead. When this time comes, a friend will usually appear, a confidant, a coach, a listener, a helper, or an Energizer Man like Matthew.
He will stay on the phone with you for hours, helping you strategize your goals, focus on a plan, create an outcome, promote your business, share a love of his local communities, make connections that last a lifetime, and he will connect you to people you'll know the rest of your life. Matthew will do all of this while being a bright shining star in the world that people certainly know and love.
Sometimes, these "Energizer Men and Women" in our lives need a recharge and the ability to take a rest from the constant giving they have done for others. They need to know that they, too, may receive back the energy they need to keep pushing forward with their gift of giving.
He's been fighting this battle with near-zero income the past 18 months and keeping him from his Real Estate passion. This is an area of work he profoundly loves and shines in but requires his voice and energy to continue. Matthew is currently without his voice, hoping the doctors can save his vocal cords so he may get off a breathing and feeding tube and get onto a full recovery.
Matthew is a warrior. He changed a career in financial services to a new Real Estate career, pushing forward without steady income; he would pass two difficult Real Estate License exams, become licensed in multiple states, move three times, sell his home at a considerable loss, and finally return to his hometown of St. Louis.
A few short later, Matthews's wife would ask for separation while beginning with a new Real Estate company. This would ultimately come with a request for a divorce and, to top it off, a throat and vocal cord cancer diagnosis from his family doctor, all within months.
Matt has the high-drive and enthusiasm rarely seen in many, with the biggest of teddy bear hearts. And yet, it's this day, we, Matthew's family, kindly ask of you to help us contribute to recharging this kind soul who has done so much for each of us just from his friendship alone.
Thank you for being apart of Matthew's life, whether big or small. We share our sincere gratitude for considering to help, reading these words, and assisting Matthew back to full healing and recovery!
May the universe protect each of you, keep you healthy, and focused on taking on the world no matter what challenge you face before you! And, may you wake each day filled with a heart of gratitude, healthy breath, a clear mind, and soul!
