Matthew Markell's Skating Journey

Welcome to My Go Fund Me Page. Let me introduce myself:

My name is Matthew Markell and I am 21 years of age. I come from the small town of Prescott, Ontario along the St. Lawrence River. I began skating at the age of 3 with the Prescott Figure Skating Club, and I have continued to represent my home club through my competitive career which began when I was 13 years old and I have been moving up the ranks ever since. I love to skate, perform, compete and to bring joy to the people who watch me. My passion, dedication and love for the sport of figure skating has taken me on this competitive skating journey to be the best I can be. During my competitive career so far, I have worked very hard to become an accomplished skater.

At the age of 17, I moved to Greater Toronto Area, away from my family and friends to pursue my figure skating dreams. Making this move was needed so that I could have access to better training facilities, coaching, and an opportunity to train with high level skaters. I Iived in Richmond Hill and Oakville at the beginning and was fortunate enough to stay with skating families during the first couple of years to help ease the cost of my training. I trained as a national level athlete and completed my grade 12 education with honors.

My accomplishments so far have always pushed me to become an even better skater and I am always thriving to become one of the best skaters in Canada. During my younger years in figure skating, I won 3 Provincial titles and 5 Eastern Ontario titles. I have competed at the Canadian Nationals 5 times, placing 2nd in Novice Men in 2016 and went on to win the National Junior Men title in 2018. Being on the podium gave me the opportunity to represent Canada internationally in Luxembourg and Egna, Italy. I am currently competing in Sr. Men, being the highest level in Canada. In my second season competing at the Canadian Senior Nationals, I achieved my goal of finishing in the top 10 with a 9th place finish at the 2020 Canadian Nationals which was held in Mississauga.

This upcoming season will probably be one of the most important of my skating career so far. Not only is it an Olympic season with team slots on the line, but it will be crucial for how I set myself up for the next 4 years leading up to the 2026 Olympic Games. I have made a move to the city of Toronto and am switching training centers with hopes of continuing to climb the senior national ranks in Canada. I will be adding new coaches to my team and putting in more training hours both on and off the ice, giving me more structure, routine and a better opportunity to grow technically in regards to my elements, as I push myself for a spot on the National team.

We have been faced with uncertain times since Covid 19 came into our country and everyone’s lives have changed. Before the pandemic hit, I was working as a server at a restaurant in Oakville, but have been laid off a number of times because of the lockdowns in Ontario. I financially support myself here in Toronto but have found myself out of work, still training and pushing through.

Competing at this level is very costly and to receive funding requires a top 5 placement at the Canadian Nationals. This is definitely one of the goals I will be working very hard to achieve moving forward. I am gaining more and more confidence in my skating and look forward to the upcoming season and to begin training in my new environment.

I have been very fortunate the last 2 years before Covid hit to have a local restaurant in my home town host an annual spaghetti dinner for me which helped to raise funds that would go towards my training expenses. A 3rd annual fundraiser spaghetti dinner was already planned for March of 2020 in my home town, but was cancelled due to Covid. My home town of Prescott and the surrounding area have always been very supportive of my figure skating career and have always helped me out for which I am very grateful.

I want nothing more than to continue my skating journey. I am asking for your help in keeping my journey going. I know that I am capable to reach my full potential. Thank you so much and please follow my updates to see the progress in my skating and for posts about my journey.
