Matthew Guillen's Road to Recovery

Matt was hit in the head by a baseball at the end of indoor practice on Saturday, January 27, 2018, in a complete freak accident. We were fortunate to have a father on the team who works in a trauma center. He, along with Matthew's dad, Doug, immediately called 911. The father and Doug went in the ambulance to Shock Trauma where Matt was immediately rushed into surgery.

Surgery went well, and Matt is now recovering in intensive care at Shock Trauma. He is unable to speak and is hooked up to many machines to aid body functions for now.  They need to allow his brain time to heal. We are blessed that he did not need to return to surgery last night as the bleeding on his brain slowed. He has been able to respond to hourly commands with a right-side response to thumbs up and brief eye opening.  Sunday, January 28th we were overjoyed that he was able to move his left arm. This is very encouraging.

His older brother Manny and other family members stopped by along with the boys and parents from his travel baseball team who prayed in the hospital chapel.

Matt is a sophomore at Marriotts Ridge High School and a sports enthusiast who loves baseball, basketball and golf.  He plays shortstop for the WHC Renegades 15U travel baseball team.  He is also a lover of animals, kind, thoughtful, and has a charismatic personality.

We have put together this page to help the family with travel and medical expenses as they embark on this journey for Matt's recovery.

Please pray for our Matt, his brother, and parents as we hope for his recovery.

The hospital has set up a Caring Bridge web site for Matt that will have updates posted as we continue down this road.  https://www.caringbridge.org/ visit/mattguillen

Many thanks for all of your support.
