Matthew Cornett Fund

Dear Friends, Family, and Strangers alike ,

I would like to appeal to your generosity for a fundraising project.  My good friend, Terry Cornett is in desperate need of a new handicapped accessible van for her adult handicapped son, Matthew. Our goal is to raise enough money to help this family purchase a safe and reliable vehicle to help transport Matthew to and from doctor appointments, medical emergencies, and fun family outings.

Matthew was born almost three months prematurely and has many serious medical issues. He developed a bleed in his brain that went undiagnosed resulting in blindness at roughly six months of age. He has cerebral palsy and is unable to talk or walk which results in him being confined to a wheelchair for mobility. Over the years, he has had hundreds of surgeries and has acquired extensive medical equipment based on his health needs including a ventilator and oxygen.

Terry is a very loving and devoted mother to Matthew and her 28-year-old daughter, Meagan. Her husband, Steve, died after a long illness, nearly 8 years ago, leaving Terry and Meagan to assume all the household and financial burdens and responsibilities. Terry has been Matthew's main caregiver his entire life.  She has dedicated herself to provide Matthew with the best possible personal and medical care, which exceeds the care received by staff in most hospital facilities. His doctors are always amazed with his condition. Terry has also been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and though she has had some difficulties resulting from her M.S., her main issue is fatigue.

Meagan still lives with her family and assists in Matthew’s care when she is not working at the airport to help support her family.  She managed her responsibilities of family, job and college and finally, in May 2017, graduated from Northern Kentucky University with a Bachelor of Arts and Science degree.

Currently, they have a 19-year-old van that has been, running on a prayer, for well over a year. The van is not reliable and just this past April, broke down while transporting Matthew to a doctor’s appointment. The task of lifting, rotating, and locking Matthew’s large wheelchair into place is also a very exhausting task for Terry and Meagan. This family needs a new reliable rear entry handicapped van to get Matthew to doctor appointments and to provide less strain and exhaustion for his mom and sister.

Matthew will be turning the “BIG 40” this September and it is our hope that we can reach this goal and provide him and his family with this new van as a “once in a lifetime” birthday present. Matthew loves music and a new, rear entry handicapped van would not only provide him with safe and reliable transportation to medical appointments and emergency care, but it would also allow him to attend family get-togethers and enjoy concerts at Riverbend.
