Donation protected
My father Matthew Bankston JR is a 60 year old veteran who was involved in a hit and run on April 25,2020. The individual who hit my father in his wheelchair left him to die. My father has always been a very strong , kind and funny man. My father had a stroke in 2016 and became wheelchair bound . He has been putting his best foot forward and being strong throughout these last few years through all of his surgeries. Now his life has been taken away by a man who was drunk and high from cocaine and other substances. I am asking for you to donate anything you can so we will be able to bury my father as he wanted. Please and Thank You

John Nicholas Obrien, 31, of Winter Haven is accused of fatally hitting a man on a motorized scooter while under the influence of drugs.
WINTER HAVEN — A Winter Haven man was arrested on felony hit-and-run and DUI charges after a fatal crash that occurred Saturday when he lost control of his vehicle.
The crash occurred about 12:30 p.m. Saturday. John Nicholas Obrien, 31, of Winter Haven was traveling west on State Road 540 north of Eagle Lake Road when his vehicle left the road and hit a person driving a motorized scooter on a sidewalk, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
After the crash, Obrien fled the scene, the FHP said. Witnesses to the crash waved down a passing trooper, who then caught up to Obrien a short distance from the crash on Eagle Lake Road.
The person on the scooter, Mathew Bankston Jr., 60, of Mulberry was taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Health Center, where he died, according to Obrien’s arrest affidavit filed with the Polk County Clerk of Courts.
Obrien was transported to Winter Haven Hospital to be treated for minor injuries, then booked into Polk County Jail, There, a Polk County Sheriff’s Office drug recognition expert determined he was under the influence of a controlled substance.
Obrien faces charges of DUI manslaughter and leaving the scene of a crash involving death.
When FHP crash investigators asked Obrien what caused the crash, he first said he popped a tire and lost control of his vehicle, then said he hit a pole and lost control of his vehicle. The affidavit says the investigator saw Obrien’s vehicle with “a blown out left front tire” and extensive front end damage.
Investigators also said his eyes were “bloodshot and watery” and that his speech was “slurred.” Obrien told the FHP he was a heroin addict, according to the affidavit.
