Dearest Friends and Family,
We are writing to humbly ask for your support as I begin a year of study in the United Kingdom.
Over the past two years, I have finished my coursework for a Doctoral degree in Choral Conducting at the University of North Texas. As I work to complete my dissertation in fulfillment of my degree, I have been offered an incredible opportunity to study in Birmingham, England with world-renowned conductor, Simon Halsey.
Halsey is the chorus master for the London and Birmingham Symphony Choruses, the two premier symphonic choruses in England. He is also the head of Choral Studies at the University of Birmingham. My biggest draw to this program is the opportunity to study with a conductor who is at the forefront of the music world, has a passion for helping others through choral music, and who can guide me in this direction as I begin my own conducting career.
As Shari has now finished her Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance, she will be using the next year to explore professional opportunities in Europe while I complete my studies. After two years apart, we are thrilled to be making this move together.
For both Shari and me, the performance of music has always been our great passion and the focus of our lives’ work. We believe that in times of personal and global distress, the artistic community has a unique ability to reach out and provide impactful ways of connecting people with each other. Art has the power to unite and recall elements of the human spirit we may collectively have forgotten.
Shari and I are passionate about using our skills and talents for the betterment of those around us, and we would not ask for your help in this endeavor if it weren’t truly needed. Your love and support are the most important gifts, but if you have any means that you would be willing to contribute to our year abroad, we would be eternally grateful. The money we raise will be used primarily to cover the cost of tuition at the University of Birmingham, moving expenses and visa/travel fees.
It is not easy for us to ask for help, and we truly appreciate any support that would make this dream more attainable for us. Regardless of your ability to help us financially, we send you love and are so grateful for yours.
