Matt & Penny's Journey: Your Help Matters

Matt and Penny have been a constant in the Hinsdale community for decades. Since the 1980s, they’ve been familiar and friendly faces, starting out at the local Shell mini market and then Hinsdale News Agency. Together, they built a life rooted in hard work, love, and dedication.

Matt, a dedicated family man and a CSO with the Hinsdale Police Department, has always done everything he can to support his wife, Penny. His work ethic is unmatched; starting every day at 4 AM, helping Penny due to her physical limitations, bringing newspaper bundles into the store and getting her set up and comfortable before he heads off to his own multiple jobs, balancing all of this just to make ends meet. Between his security job at Hinsdale Central High School, his community service with the Hinsdale Police Department, playing music at festivals with his band Reckless, and working with Prime N Tender Meats during holidays and summer farmers markets, Matt works tirelessly to ensure that their life continues to run as smoothly a possible.

Penny, with her sweet smile and kind heart, has always been the welcoming face at the Hinsdale News Agency. Consistently, she’s been the first to check on and offer prayers for others, even when SHE needed that most. But Penny’s own health journey has been far from easy. Ten years ago, Penny was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, which she fought fiercely and beat. Though she’s now celebrating nine years cancer-free this February 17th, the chemo treatments left her weakened, leading to a limit in her physical abilities.

Now, to live a more productive life and regain her mobility, Penny desperately needs a double knee replacement. While her surgeries will be somewhat covered by insurance, the remaining costs will likely lead Matt and Penny into a difficult financial situation with barely enough to make ends meet. Her recovery time will be extensive leaving their family with only one income. Despite never asking for help, and not having much to give, they have always been the first to offer whatever they can to others. This is their time to receive some much-needed support.

Matt and Penny are two of the kindest, most caring people you will ever meet. If there were ever a couple who truly deserves a helping hand, it’s these two beautiful souls. Update: Pennys first knee surgery is Tuesday February 25th. She will be off of work approximately 12 weeks to recover.. if all goes well, they will then schedule the second knee surgery and she will be off another 12 weeks. Please keep her in your prayers.
