It is with sorrowful hearts that the family of Matthew Craig Mahnken must announce the news of his passing. Our cherished Matthew succumbed to COVID-19 on February 19, 2021, surrounded in love by his fiancee, Ivanna Avalos, and close friends and family at New York-Presbyterian Hospital in Manhattan. Matthew was 34-years old. In addition to his devoted fiancee, he leaves behind their 18-month old son, Jeffrey Peter Mahnken.
Matt and Ivanna have been together for close to a decade, and welcomed their little boy, Jeffrey, into the world on August 19, 2019. Shortly after becoming an elated father, Matthew asked Ivanna to be his wife, and she, of course, accepted. However, with the onset of the pandemic, the couple set aside their wedding plans in order to focus on raising their infant under these new and extraordinary circumstances. Despite the setbacks presented by the pandemic, Matt expressed nothing but gratitude for his perfect little boy and his beloved fiancee. He was in love twice over, and overlooked no opportunity to share his good fortune.
With the sudden and tragic loss of Matthew to COVID-19, Ivanna and Jeffrey find themselves navigating a very different future. While nothing can ever compensate for the immense pain of losing Matt- a father, a protector, a partner in life- we can support his family during this unimaginably difficult time. All proceeds of this campaign will directly benefit Ivanna and Jeffrey. Every bit of your generosity will mean one less worry for his family, as they move forward on this uncertain path of grieving and healing.
A memorial service for Matthew will be held at a later date, once safer gathering can be ensured. Until we are able to properly celebrate Matthew's life, we ask that you share your memories of him. While many tears will fall today, tomorrow, and certainly, for many days to come, let us remember who Matt really was- an irreverent goofball with nothing but kindness and laughter in his heart. No amount of tears will ever come close to the laughter and joy he provided to us all.
