My name is Matthew Outwin Hersey and I'm from Hyannis, MA where I attended Barnstable High School. I now attend Northeastern University as a freshman. I was awarded enough federal aid and university grants that I have gone to school paying no dues. I studied abroad my first semester in Prague, Czech Republic where I learned how to budget the money I had earned working over the summer to buy groceries and plan occasional trips around Central Europe. After spending my first semester in Prague, I returned to Boston to finish freshman year.
I take my final exams in late April, and after that, I have earned a spot at the prestigious Oakcliff Training Camp as a sapling recruit. I have signed on to learn how to run a professional campaign, earn my safety at sea degree, and engage in multiple offshore races, including the first test event for the 2024 Paris Olympics Shorthanded Offshore race in May, hosted by Oakcliff.
Despite being awarded a 25% scholarship for the program, the training camp will cost $4,200 for remaining room and board and tuition. My family and I cannot afford to fully fund my attendance at Oakcliff. I am asking for any amount of your support in pursuing professional training for my sailing career.
Ever since I was a child, sailing has been my passion. My family has always struggled to finance my sailing career, but they have always believed in me, supported me, and cheered me on—no matter how I performed. I have always understood that hard work, perseverance and positivity are what make a person outstanding, and I have always strived to maintain these as my own ideals. I have held faith in myself, my talents and my abilities to become a Volvo Ocean Race sailor. My attendance to Oakcliff is the launching pad that I need to achieve my dream, but I need your help to get there. Making my family, friends and Cape Cod proud has always been my goal and no matter where my travels have taken me, that goal has stayed true. With humility, I would ask for your assistance in advancing my sailing dreams and becoming a stronger son, brother, friend and leader along the way.
I am asking for $2000 so that I can afford to partly pay for tuition and room and board. The full cost of the program will be $4,200 which I am currently attempting to finance via applications and requests to foundations and charities.
