Matias Daniel needs your support

Hi there! My name is Julissa. I am originally from Nicaragua but have lived in Madrid, Spain, for the last five months. I am a single mother of a six-year-old boy called Matias Daniel, and this is part of our story.

 

As Matias grew and developed during his first couple of years, I noticed that he had significant developmental delays and dealt with many uncontrollable and inappropriate behaviors.

 

We visited a neurologist and other doctors in Nicaragua, and they told us that there was nothing to worry about because they didn't find any abnormal issues in his diagnosis. However, as he continued to grow, we noticed no improvement in his behavior and limited vocabulary for a child his age.

 

My family and I decided to get a second opinion, but this time in Spain, where my sister and her family live. After arriving, we immediately began the process of seeing a specialized psychologist in Madrid, who treated and studied him for several months. As a result, Matias was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder level 1 and a language disorder. We began treatment and have seen a remarkable improvement in many areas.

 

I have decided to stay in Spain to continue his medical follow-up and sessions. Matias will be going to speech therapy, psychological, and psycho-educational sessions. The doctor has recommended an inclusive school where he can have individualized attention based on his learning pace and ASD needs. Unfortunately, we don't have these opportunities in Nicaragua, and education in ASD subjects is inferior.

 

My family has supported me over the last five months, but, as some might know, the situation in my country is not easy financially speaking, and there is not much they can do for us.

 

Since arriving in Spain, I have focused the last five months on getting my son medical help for his condition, and I have not worked. I plan to find a job that will allow me to support us while we live here and continue his sessions and medical appointments. The cost of my son's school will be difficult for me to pay on just my salary, and that's why I am starting this campaign today so Matias's needs can be met for at least one full year and hopefully see lots of improvement after that.
