OBSTETRIC MATERNAL FISTULA PROJECT

"A young mother has been ostracized from her community. She is not able to return home or to her community due to developing a fistula during child birth. She has become doubly incontinent of both urine and faeces. She is unclean and cannot return to her home with her baby."

Abena can ill afford the operative costs and the cost of transporting herself to the treatment centre. In the NHS , these patients with very little struggle are put right. We are able, with your help to make available the same dedicated surgeons doing charitable acts in communities where these women live and thereby enabling them to return to their homes, get back their lives and look after their families.

This year, we at GDDA, have decided to support the Obstetric Fistula Fund in Ghana and, in particular the work of Professor Lassey and his team. Professor' Lassey's team are doing incredible work to improve the health of mothers in Ghana. We believe that mothers matter and this is why we  want to get behind him this year,

We have a fund-raising target of £5,000! Will you help us?

Funding enables us to support a dedicated team aspiring to provide excellent care near  their communities. Professor Lassey is a surgeon based in Ghana who has been running a VVF outreach project in Ghana for many years. Due to an ebb in the funding for obstetric fistula repairs, the number of women receiving treatment has dwindled. Over the last five years, the focus of the surgery to restore the dignity of these disadvantaged women has been the 40-bedded Fistula Wing of the “MERCY WOMEN’S CATHOLIC HOSPITAL” at Mankessim, about 2 hrs’ drive from Accra. The fistula care outreach team headed by Prof. Anyetei Lassey, the Chairman of the National Obstetric Fistula Task Team, is based at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. The team visits the Mankessim unit when funding is available to pay the hospital for the repair of the patients on their lists as and when the funding is available. He has indicated that the poor funding for fistula repairs is the main restriction to offering care to more patients.

With our support, help and funding, the outreach team will be able to provide care for more women especially from the northern half of our country.

We hope you will stand alongside us as we champion this causes! There are lots of ways to support but, perhaps, our favourite would be if you were to but a tickets for the Charity Gala, it promises to be a spectacular night.
