Hello, I am Silvana Galdos, my nephew Mateo is 14 years old. He lives in Lima, Peru, with my oldest sister Paola. Mateo came to this world two months early because of a placental abruption and had to stay in ICU for one month before he could go home with his parents. At four months old, he was diagnosed with Spastic Cerebral Palsy, which caused hypertonia in his muscles, making his limbs extra stiff and unable to walk.

He has been in therapy since he was tiny. He has forgone four surgeries to help with the stiffness of his legs and hips with the hopes that one day he will be able to stand up and, if God permits, be able to walk (with support but independently). Unfortunately, four surgeries are not enough. Mateo needs another urgent correction to his feet (which would help with the stability he needs to hold his body straight up) and hips to increase his chances of standing and, later on, walking.

The doctor has reconsidered the surgery taking into consideration that Mateo suffers from seizures, and decided to do two separate interventions (feet and hips, or hips and feet, we do not know the order yet) to avoid having Mateo under anesthesia for 6 hours which could be very dangerous because of his condition.

[Although we are thankful that the doctor is taking all the necessary precautions, now we have to pay for two different surgeries. This is why I am changing the goal of this fundraiser].

He will need this surgery as soon as possible, and after six weeks in a cast from his hips down, he will start intense physical therapy. These funds will help with this surgery and the upcoming therapies Mateo will need during his journey. PLEASE, help my sister Paola ensure a future for Mateo. There is no small amount of help; every penny counts.

Of course, Paola is behind this fantastic kid and everything he has accomplished. She cares for him 24/7 and has developed an extraordinary strength to pick him up when moving him from the bed to his wheelchair, to the car, in and out ( no handicap special car ), bathing, changing, etc. It really takes a superpower to do all she does and dedicate her life to her beloved son.

Please know that Mateo is a very happy boy despite his difficulties. He prays for everyone around him and less privileged, plays classical music to go to sleep, loves to navigate on google earth and "visit" different places all over the world. He likes to learn new languages like Quechua and English and attends virtual school on his computer. Mateo is a self-driven young man with big dreams and ambitions... wants to host a television show for young kids and teach them about Peruvian culture, fun places to visit, and how to cook and make candy!

We are all very optimistic! Although Mateo is not thrilled about being in a cast for so long during summer, he will work very hard with everyone around him to make his dreams come true. Someday, he will be standing up as a host of a tv show or traveling around the world for real!!!! and cooking for all of us his favorite dishes. God has given us this little angel's happiness and smiles to enlighten everyone around him.

Hola, soy Silvana Galdos, mi sobrino Mateo tiene 14 años y vive en Lima-Peru con su mama Paola, mi hermana mayor. Mateo vino a este mundo dos meses antes a causa de un desprendimiento de placenta, quedándose en UCI por un mes antes de ir a casa con sus papis. A los cuatro meses de edad, fué diagnosticado con Parálisis Cerebral Espástica lo que causa una hipertonia en sus músculos, incapacitándolo de caminar. Mateo ha estado en terapia desde muy pequeño, ha tenido ya cuatro cirujías con la esperanza de ayudarlo a poder pararse, y si Dios permite, caminar! Lamentablemente, cuatro cirujías no son suficiente. Mateo necesita otra intervención quirúrjica que corrija sus pies (lo que le dara mejor estabilidad para pararse) y sus caderas.

El doctor ha reconsiderado la operación teniendo en cuenta de que Mateo sufre de convulsiones, y ha decidido hacer la intervention en dos fases (pies y cadera o, cadera y pies, no sabemos todavía el orden) para evitar tener a Mateo bajo efectos de anestesia por 6 horas lo cual podría ser muy peligroso en su caso.

[Aún cuando estamos muy agradecidos de que este doctor esta tomando todos las precauciones necesarias, ahora tenemos que pagar por dos cirugías. Es esta la razón por la que estoy cambiando el monto inicial de nuestra colecta].

Mateo necesita esta cirujía lo antes posible, y luego de estar enyesado de la cadera hasta abajo por seis semanas, hará terapias intensas de recuperación. Estos fondos que juntemos ayudarán a cubrir esta operación y las terapias que Mateo necesita. Por Favor, ayuda a mi hermana Paola a asegurarle un futuro a Mateo. No hay monto muy pequeño, cada centavo cuenta!

Por supuesto, Paola es la que está detrás de todos los logros de este niño. Ella es la que lo cuida 24/7 y ha desarrollado una fuerza extraordinaria para poder levantarlo de su cama a su silla de ruedas, al carro y fuera del carro ( no tiene un carro especial con esos aparatos handicap), bañarlo, cambiarlo, moverlo, etc. Realmente toma super poderes para hacer lo que ella hace y dedicar su vida entera para cuidar a su querido hijo.

Es importante decir que Mateo es un niño feliz a pesar de sus dificultades. El reza en las noches y pide por los demás, escucha música clásica para dormir, le encanta navegar en google earth y "visita" diferentes lugares en el mundo. Le gusta aprender idiomas como el Quechua e Inglés y, va a su escuela virtual. Mateo es un niño emprendedor con muchos sueños y ambiciones....quiere ser conductor de un programa de televisión para niños y enseñarles sobre la cultura peruana, lugares divertidos para visitar, y cómo cocinar y hacer postres y dulces!

Tenemos mucho optimismo! Aún cuando Mateo no esté muy animado a estar con yeso por tanto tiempo durante el verano, Él trabajará muy fuerte al lado de todos para hacer sus sueños realidad. Algún día, el estará parado en frente de una cámara de TV. conduciendo su programa, o viajando alrededor del mundo de verdad!!!!! y cocinando riquísimo sus platillos favoritos. Dios nos ha dado este angelito lleno de felicidad y hermosas sonrisas para iluminarnos.
