On August 26, 2021 Matakas received the diagnosis of Level 5 Papillary Thyroid Cancer. The shock and stress of her diagnosis resulted in her having a massive heart attack just days later. She was rushed to the hospital where four stents were placed in her heart.

Due to the recovery process of a major heart attack, Matakas is currently taking medication to prevent blood clots from blocking the stents. This has forced doctors to make the tough decision to postpone cancer surgery at least six months. During this time the cancer will be closely monitored but will force Matakas to step back from her daily activities and work load temporarily.

Matakas has been coaching every day for over 20 years and her influence has been the reason we all know and love her so much. Whether it's on or off the basketball court Matakas has made an impact and its time we give back to her in any way possible.

Donated funds will go to Matakas and her family to assist with medical bills, treatment, and medicines. She is currently in high spirits and so thankful for the out pouring love and support.
