Mat Barkley Devastating Auto Accident

Mat Barkley was involved in a single car accident on Saturday, March 16th.  He was airlifted by helicopter to the hospital with severe injuries including both legs being shattered, injuries to his pelvis, fractures to his spinal column, and a shattered eye socket that caused a bone from the socket to enter his brain.  He is still currently in a coma, has undergone the first of many surgeries that will be required to attempt to repair his legs and pelvis in the hopes he may walk again at some point, while being monitored continuously for the appropriate time to perform the surgery to remove the bone from his brain.  His long term prognosis is unknown, but the family remains vigilant in their hopes and prayers that somehow he will pull through this.



Mat was just married in September of last year to Mary Marcum,  and is the step-father to a beautiful 10 year old girl who adores him.   The family had just recently gotten into their own apartment and were settling in to their new lives together.   Currently there is some medical insurance available, however the out of pocket costs of this type of injury can potentially bankrupt even the most financially stable of families and it can be devastating to a young couple just starting out in their lives together on their own. They have now become a single income family and his wife's ability to work daily is challenged with balancing her need to be with her husband and there for her daughter and still working to keep an income and insurance benefits.


The family has not asked that a gofundme be set up, but knowing the type of financial hardships the medical expenses will be and the long term care that Mat will eventually need if he survives, pride needs to be set aside and we need to rally behind and for them.

I recently read online a statement that rings true here,  Just because you think or hope you can do something on your own, doesn't mean you should have to...  If you can, please find it in your hearts to support this young family on this horrible, unexpected journey they have found themselves on.
