On September 23rd, 15 year-old Mason was given the devastating news that he has B-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Mason had been sick for some weeks prior to this shocking diagnosis, but his illness had been attributed to one of perhaps hundreds of possible viral culprits. No one had been certain which virus, but it was generally thought that Mason would heal with time. However, things just weren’t getting better for Mason—they were getting worse. Finally, the tenacity of the Spauns and good detective work on the part of their doctor paid off and revealed the true problem with Mason’ health.
The good news is that the treatment for Mason’s illness has a very high success rate with a 75% - 80% first attempt cure rate in which the cancer disappears, never to return. However, the Spauns and particularly Mason are in for a long fight—against the harsh chemotherapy as much as against the illness itself. The lengthy period of treatment rounds will go on for six to eight months, followed by several years of maintenance.
It is likely that David and Heather will maintain their current level of income, but there will be countless trips to and from the hospital with numerous extraordinary expenses (medical and non-medical, known and unknown) related to living much of their lives outside of their home and outside of their routine.
Mason is strong and his attitude is great, but chemotherapy is already taking its toll. David, Heather, and Audrey are undoubtedly suffering along with Mason. Let’s help relieve the family of the worry over whether or not there will be enough money during this difficult period. You can help by donating here or sending funds directly to the Spaun family at 19705 Stavanger Loop NE, Poulsbo, WA 98370.
Thank you for helping Mason and the Spauns!
