I’m creating this GoFundMe for a dear friend, Amanda, whose 9-year-old son Mason has been courageously battling health challenges no child should ever have to face.

Two and a half years ago, Mason was diagnosed with leukemia at just 7 years old. Through every round of treatment, every needle, every hospital visit — he fought bravely. Just two weeks ago, Mason’s latest blood tests were excellent. Things were finally looking up.

But last week, everything changed.

Mason woke up vomiting, and Amanda rushed him to Noarlunga Hospital. A urine test revealed blood, and they were immediately transferred to the Women’s and Children’s Hospital due to fears of a possible relapse.

While it wasn’t a relapse of leukemia (thankfully), their world was turned upside down once again: Mason has now been diagnosed with HLH (Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis), TMA (Thrombotic Microangiopathy), and HUS (Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome) — three rare and life-threatening conditions.

Mason is currently in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). His kidneys have begun to fail, and he is now on dialysis. After starting with a temporary line in his neck, he has since undergone surgery to have a more permanent port placed in his chest. His liver is also under severe strain, and he’s recently developed a fever and a cold, for which he is now receiving antibiotics to prevent infection.

Amanda has had to stop working in order to be by Mason’s side around the clock. With only one income and the growing medical and everyday expenses, the financial burden is becoming overwhelming.
