My son, Mason was shot in both legs during a domestic dispute. He is not a perfect person but he is my son and while his past is somewhat sordid, he has been given a second chance at a future. The initial prognosis was grim but the doctors didn't know about my superpowers.. prayer and complete faith in God! Mason has no health insurance so any physical therapy rehab will have to be paid out of pocket. He will not be able to work for, at the very minimum, three months. So we will also have to help with his living expenses and with the two sons that live with him. We have been truly blessed by the pouring out of support and offers of help from so many. A couple of them encouraged me to set this up so we can get him the rehab and medical equipment he needs. Let me assure everyone that this is the ONLY account that has been set up by us. My husband and I will set up a checking account specifically for your donations and we will be in charge of the allocation of these donations so that all monies go to Mason's rehab and living expenses during the next three to six months. Just to give you a little idea of what we will use the money for, the machine he needs to exercise his broken leg is $22/ day so $500/ month just for that equipment rental. But he really needs to spend at least one week at an inpatient rehab so that he can learn to walk again. But he is likely not going to get a scholarship bed in any of the inpatient rehab facilities due to his past. It isn't easy to ask for help but when it is your child, pride can't get in the way of their recovery!
Here is the timeline from my Facebook post. You must start from the bottom as updates are posted at the top.
Update 8: 12/22 I was told to kerep this post so everyone would be updated as shared. Mason had a fever last night and more swelling in both legs so the doctors have added some new things to keep the legs elevated. The doctor said that because he doesn't have health insurance, he will not be moved to a physical rehab center unless there's one in Alabama with scholarship programs. Otherwise, we will have to pay out of pocket for outpatient care. Billy and I are going to set up a GoFundMe page and open an account which will be managed by US to be sure that Mason gets the care he's going to need when he gets home. I will add a link to that page as soon as it is up and any help will be appreciated but as we all know, there are scammers oout tthere who will try to take advantage of good people so unless the link is from this post, it will not be ours. The main thing needed right now is more prayers bc for every two steps forward, there's a setback but God is good and He is in complete control of this and forward progress is all that matters!!
Update 7: This is the last update to this post. I will start a new post. First, praises: Fever was controlled all night. He was in pain but otherwise had an ok night. They did a sonogram on his leg today and there's a blood clot that must be treated. Vascular surgery removed the wound vac and closed the leg with the bypass but due to the clot have waived physical therapy today. Still limited movement in the left foot but hopeful when the swelling goes down he will be able to move his foot and walk normally. That's what I am believing anyway! Please continue to pray for his complete healing and restored health. Thank you all!!
Update 6: We have some great news and a little setback. Mason was moved out of ICU so thank God!! I was set to go home for a little while but as I was learning, I noticed he was thinking a fever. They gave him Tylenol but it continued to rise so he was given ice packs and cold rags. It has come down some but infection and clotting are still our biggest risks. He will have another surgery but not sure when that will be yet. He's in a lot of pain but God is good.
Update 5: Praise our almighty God!! He is off the ventilator and while he's not out of the woods, he is in a much better place than he was 24 hours ago. He has at least one more surgery and he's in a great deal of pain but seeing those baby blue eyes looking at me gave me such relief. He's a fighter but this will be a long, hard fight. Hearing how many people were praying for him was overwhelming and emotional for him. God has him and we feel the love and the support from everyone. I'm so sorry if I haven't responded to your texts or calls but this has been a long, rollercoaster ride so far and I'm running on 1 hour sleep so just know that I appreciate each text, voicemail and comment and EVERY prayer!
Update 4: Mason is out of surgery and in recovery. They repaired the knee joint, the bones in his right leg and the vascular surgeon attempted to close the wounds on the left leg. Unfortunately the swelling is still too great to close one side but he has good blood flow and hopefully the breathing tube will be removed today. God is so good. Keep those prayers coming!!!
Update 3: I was allowed to go into the ICU for a few minutes after Mason got out of surgery but had to go in alone. He is still on the ventilator. I was mistaken about the broken bones. Those were not repaired in the initial surgery. That four hour surgery was to repair the arteries and veins and to get the bypass started to restore blood flow to his leg. He has another surgery this morning if everything remains stable with his vitals. Looking at your baby lying unconscious with tubes breathing for him; wires, tubes, gauze, monitors on every inch of his body so that you can't touch him without touching some cold, artificial piece meant to keep him alive has to be one of the most difficult things I've ever done. But as I stroked his beautiful black hair and held his ice cold fingertips in my hand, I felt a peace that is only found in Jesus. I prayed over him again and I KNOW God is bigger than all of this and HE is in control.
Tomorrow, I guess it's now today, is another day that Mason has by the grace and mercy of our Lord. Lift him up in your prayers so that he is covered during this next surgery and in the coming days. Thank you all for your love, your prayers and your support of our family.
Update 2: Mason is out of surgery but not out of the woods. There was substantial damage to the artery in his left leg and because of that and the time he was in a tourniquet, they had to do a bypass just to get blood flow back to that leg. Two bones repaired in the other leg and hopefully his leg can be saved but the primary concern now is blood clots. He will be in ICU for a while. The vascular surgeon said he was a very "sick young man" and would have a long recovery but the next 24 hours are crucial. Please keep those prayers coming. We need them and we KNOW they work.
Update 1: We are at the hospital (2 hours ago) in Chattanooga and he was already in surgery when we arrived. It's been over 2 hours but we are praying and ask that you continue to pray as well. I appreciate the calls, texts and posts and please know that I a.n feeling your love, support and prayers. Keep then coming and I will use FB to post updates!
Please pray for my son, Mason. He has been airlifted to hospital. He needs your prayers. I need your prayers. This is a long hard ride for a mother. But I want to share something with you about a mother's connection to her child and our Father's connection to His children. This morning, I had a terrible tugging at my heart. I felt a need to pray a special prayer for Mason, a prayer of salvation and peace. I prayed that God would reveal His plan to him and to protect him and give him hope bc I just had a very strange feeling. As soon as I said "Amen", my phone rang to say Mason was injured. I was told at that time that he was ok and was being taken by ambulance to RMC. When I got there, it was on lockdown but I saw a familiar face, Ronnie Rowan so I sat and waited. My friend Tina Rowan Hodge arrived to check on her step dad and I told her what happened. I had told Billy not to come bc again I was told he was ok. Another familiar face appeared and she asked me to step into a room with her to talk. She nodded to Tina to come. The news was not good. He had lost a great deal of blood, he was on a ventilator and would be to be life-flighted to another hospital. It felt like someone kicked me in the stomach and as strong as I wanted to be, I broke down. But God KNEW I would need my friends. Even though I thought I knew what I needed and, through my stubbornness, dismissed my husband and father saying I would be fine to go on my own, God KNEW what I needed. He had me surrounded by my friends who would comfort me until my husband arrived. No matter how far our children stray, they are always our children and the love we feel for them is unconditional. That's the same way God loves us bc we are ALL His children. He never stops loving us, He never stops trying to help us. He wants the very best for us and He will always give us what we NEED. I absolutely believe in the power of prayer and I'm asking everyone who reads this to stop and pray for Mason Carnes and the surgeons who will be working to save his life because only through the Almighty Physician will he be truly healed.
