On November 6, Mason woke up with a rash that covered about half his body. As expected, it was from his Seizure Medicine. His doctor said that there was a chance this might happen. Unfortunately, it was past 5:00, the doctor's office was closed and he was rushed to the ER. First ER, no answers, but were told to take some Tylenol and vitamins in hopes it would go away, which of course as a patient you listen to the doctors thinking they are “professionals” and do what they say. The next day (Saturday) Mason was covered from the head down and was in so much pain from the rash. His lips were swollen and he could hardly swallow. Again he was rushed to a different Hospital in San Antonio and got a room immediately in the ER thanks to his cousin who is a doctor there. His skin started blistering at this point and they Diagnosed Mason with Steven Johnson Syndrome.
NOBODY should ever have to endure the suffering and excruciating pain caused by Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS) with a side dish of Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN). There are no proper words to describe watching a person's body attack its own skin, “burning” him over 70% of his body, leaving his mouth, nose, and throat with zero skin, unable to swallow, eyesight being threatened, and other awful details I will not mention..... being told there is no cure and they can only offer "supportive care" for the management of this syndrome as it runs it course...... all stemming from a prescribed medication (Lamictal) that is touted to "help" with seizures. They say it's "rare" to get this, but it doesn't feel so rare when it's happening to someone you love.
Mason suffered burns on over 70% of his body and is still struggling with the care of his eyesight. He is waiting to see the eye specialist to find out if any further treatment will be necessary to heal his eyes. It was a horrific battle but after 11 days in the ICU burn unit at Brooke Army Medical Center, Mason was able to walk out of the hospital to return home to his young family to begin the healing process.
He has a long road ahead of him. All proceeds from this account will be used to cover medical expenses and living expenses. He is currently unable to work and any donations made will go a long way to help him support his family until his life can hopefully one day return to normal.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your supportive words and acts of love along this journey. His family is extremely grateful for all of the love you have shown in the past month.
