Mary is on the long road to recovery after a liver transplant.
She has lived in the Alrlington / Alexandria area for the last 30 years. She has worked for most of the local newspapers, including the Alexadria Times Newspaper and the Alexandria Gazette Packet. She is currently publisher of Zebra Magazine .
An accidental overdose of Tylenol, used to kill the pain of a toothache, destroyed her liver in only a few short days. She needed to have a liver transplant right away.
According to the American Liver Foundation, there are more people who need a liver transplant than there are donated livers. There are currently over 16,000 Americans on the waiting list for a liver transplant. Mary is one of the fortunate to have been able to be saved by a liver transplant. However, the costs are staggering. The cost of admission to a hospital for a liver transplant is estimated at $317,000. That's before they even start the operation.
Mary is currently at Medstar Georgetown University Hospital . It will be many weeks before she can leave the hospital. When she does, she will be facing a life-long struggle to keep the new liver working. She will need constant care for months before she can again live on her own.
Please help our Mary as she is a wonderful person and a true friend.
It is likely Medicaid will cover most of Mary's hospital and prescription exoenses, but what she needs right now is IMMEDIATE help to keep her going. She had no savings, as her whole life is The Zebra. All she needs is rent, car payment/insurance, grocery, funds for a part-time helper to drive her to dialysis, doctor's appointments, etc. Money she does not have. Any little bit will help.
Thank you so much.
