Small leap for the maniacs but giant leap for Mary

We are raising money to support Mary in her journey to try and overcome a condition which she has had to live with for the past 20 years. Mary is a 50 year old mother of two daughters and grandmother of 2 young boys. She has always been a confident, enthusiastic and inspiring woman and an excellent role model to her family and friends. She has always led an active lifestyle; regularly going to the gym and spent several years playing Rounders. Unfortunately, at only 27 years of age, Mary was diagnosed with Cervical cancer and underwent an intensive course of Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy. This also resulted in her having a full Hysterectomy. Mary’s positive attitude and strength of spirit saw her overcome this horrendous disease and thankfully she was given the all clear. However, in 2003 Mary began to notice swelling in her right leg which progressively got worse, to the point that she was struggling with her mobility. After several investigations by medical professionals, she was diagnosed with Lymphoedema. It is a long term chronic condition which causes swelling in the body tissues as a result of the Lymphatic system no longer working properly. This was a result of her previous cancer treatment. Despite this chronic condition and the restriction it has caused, Mary has continued to persevere with her usually positive mental attitude and huge smile. For the last 16 years she has engaged in treatment with the NHS, seeing Specialists in London. Despite several different courses of action, including compression bandage treatments and taking daily antibiotics to prevent infection, Mary has seen her symptoms become more severe in recent years. This has led to her having Liposuction but again, the symptoms have persisted. By 2018, the Lymphoedema had spread to both of her legs and in more recent months, she has begun to show symptoms in her arms, neck, shoulders, stomach and hips. She now struggles to walk for extended periods, her skin is sore to the touch and she struggles to get up stairs. After seeking more support from her Specialist, they have indicated this may be caused by an unknown condition, rather than the Lymphoedema. This has now forced Mary to seek private consultation and treatment with Anne Dancey Plastic Surgery in Birmingham. This is where we step in… Her family and friends (Mary’s Maniacs!) will be working together to overcome various physical and mental activities in order to try and raise money to support her. The money will be used to fund consultations and subsequent treatment she may require, to give her the best opportunity possible to regain her mobility and be able to carry on doing the things we all take for granted! We wanted to set the fund target to zero, because any money donated is a massive help! We already have a few ideas of challenges which we have set ourselves but welcome anything people would like to suggest, whatever we have to do to support her!
