Three things I’m truly passionate about are God, people, and music. Here’s how ‘these three intertwine.
I wasn’t born in a Christian family, but I’m grateful to have parents who raised me and my two other siblings to the best of their abilities. I’m grateful that they sent us to a Christian school from the very beginning because that’s where I first heard about Jesus and learned about all the things He did. It took me a few years to respond, but it changed the entire course of my life when I did.
My life took a 180-degree turn:
From a life without purpose to a one clearly defined.
From a life without hope to a one full of faith.
From a life of hatred to a one filled with love.
Cheesy, but it’s how the entire course of my history changed.
As a prideful and boastful 11-year old, I dreamt of nothing other than to be a concert pianist. I yearned for the fame and applause that I would earn on stage, plus the adornment of the crowd. Unexpectedly, God closed all doors toward that dream, which I am utterly grateful that He did. Yet I continued to hope and dream that one day, I’d still be in the field of music. Although it’s not a promising field for everyone, I knew that I was being called to be a light and salt in that specific field.
It took a while from the conception of that selfish dream until God opened the door again for me to walk towards that. I served at my local church while I was earning my Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, which I knew it was all necessary to peel off all unhelpful attitudes and mindsets. I never thought I’d be able to pursue music again, but God was just molding me and preparing me for what was to come, teaching me to fully trust in Him and not in my own self.
During mid-2017, I received a one-year scholarship from National Taiwan Normal University. Being a student there gave me the opportunity to learn from the amazing faculty. Although it was full of challenges, it greatly encouraged me to audition for Berklee College of Music, a school I’ve been dreaming of attending for many years already.
Prior to receiving the scholarship, I’ve met and worked with people in different fields and life stages. But the ones which caught my heart were the youth. I’ve encountered a lot who were locked up by the hurt and pain of their past. Some were even subjected to unjustly traumatic experiences causing them to be blinded from their true identity in Christ. These experiences don’t even make me wonder why depression and suicide rates continue to hike, or why the younger generation’s will continues to weaken.
With the countless hours I’ve spent in church, I’ve seen people were unarmed by music, opening up their hearts to the message. I’ve experienced it myself. Outside of religion’s context, music continues to perfectly do its job of expressing the deepest thoughts and emotions of a person or vice versa. Eventually, I found out about Music Therapy, and how Music Therapists have been recognized as healthcare professionals in America. Which was great news for me, because I lost all desire of using music as a means of gaining fame or glory while I was growing up in the faith. I desired to use it to heal others.
In April 13, 2018, I finally received my letter of admission from Berklee College of Music.
Despite the amount that my family will be helping me out with on this pursuit, the cost of going to Berklee is too high for us. Which is why I’ve started fundraising ever since I’ve received the letter. I also have pending scholarships and grant applications.
I also intend to work after my first year (international students are only allowed to work after a year of stay in America), to fund my studies.
I only have less than a month left to complete the first payment of the tuition. If you find it in your heart to support me in this pursuit, I would be eternally grateful!
And rest assured that I’ll be making great progress in my skills and knowledge, and you will see output through my media channels.
I also promise to pay it forward through my skills as early as possible.
No one has ever become poor by giving.
