Maryama is an amazing, young and courageous 13 years old girl who resides in Godey, Ethiopia with her parents. She wants nothing more in life than a normal childhood. Maryama has never been to school and rarely ventures out her tiny space outside her parent’s compound because of a medical condition that leaves her constantly wet and malodorous. 
  
Maryama was born with a deformed bladder. At the age of five she was operated on in Nairobi with Exstrophy-Epispadia but the operation was unsuccessful. She was examined at the University of Nairobi, College of Health Sciences, School of Medicine when she was six. The conclusion was bilateral Vesico-ureteric reflux grade 1, diastasis of the pubis symphysis and spina bifida.  
 
Maryama desperately needs medical attention and a bladder reconstruction and augmentation which is a very complicated procedure.  Maryama’s doctor has informed her parents that the operation cannot be done in Africa. In fact, we’ve been informed that the operation can only be performed in the US or Germany. 
 
Although devoted to her care, Maryama’s parents lack the resources and are not able to provide the necessary attention Maryama’s medical condition requires. 
 
Fortunately, with the help of the Denan Project, the top surgeons at Yale in New Haven and St. Barnabas in New Jersey have agreed to perform the surgery for free. Her family has secured enough funds to bring Maryama and her father to the US and to pay for their non-hospital stay. However, Yale and St. Barnabas have not agreed to cover the costs of Maryama's hospital stay and that is what the money is for.
