Mary Culbertson needs surgery for a hernia

Our mother, Mary, has had a hernia for many years now. She has done everything in her power to avoid surgery through diligent diet and exercise. This worked well for a while but as time has gone by she has become increasingly sensitive to nearly every type of food. She is in immense pain nearly everyday. Now the doctor says if she keeps putting it off it could actually kill her.
Despite the fact that she drives a school bus and manages an apartment complex, she has been completely uninsured for many years. She recently signed up for insurance through the state. Unfortunately, even with insurance she will have to pay $8000 out of pocket. We set the goal for less because there are 2 small fundraisers through the Eagles and the American Legion that will also contribute to the cost.
Our mom works very hard. She is an active grandmother who goes above and beyond for her children and grandchildren. She has organized and held countless fundraisers for the ones she loves AND for strangers. She is humble and frugal and would never ask for a handout or for help but help is what she needs right now.
Mom's surgery is scheduled for June 2nd. She will be on bedrest for one week. We are aware that GoFundMe does take a percentage of money raise for a fee. We feel it would be more convenient for mom and for donors to do it this way than to use other apps that might require people to set up an account (PayPal, Venmo, cashapp, etc). However, if you want to donate using another method feel free to contact any of us and we will do our best to accommodate.
