Dear Community of Pickens County, five years ago my wife and I moved to the wonderful city of Jasper. Right away I met a group called the ROMEOs (Retired Old Men Eating Out). Every Monday morning they would meet at Mary Ann's Country Cooking, in Jasper, for breakfast. I soon learned about some of the wonderful things Mary Ann does for our community. One of those being feeding anyone for free on Thanksgiving Day. For five years Mary Ann and her staff have worked 20 hour days for over a week to get everything ready for 1,000+ folks on Thanksgiving as well as taking care of daily customers. When I found out she cooked over 50 turkeys for the event, I offered to deep fry them for her. I did this for the past three years. During this time I got to know Mary Ann and her employees well and found out what kind, caring people they all are. And how much they love our Community.
On October 6, 2019 everything changed. Arson totally destroyed Mary Ann's business leaving her and all of her employees without work. Even then, she was determined to continue the Thanksgiving tradition and made arrangements to use the Pickens High School Cafeteria. Mary Ann hoped (and needed) the restaurant to reopen months ago. Then along came the COVID-19 Pandemic, causing multiple delays.
Hopefully the building will be ready for business in about 4-6 weeks; however, as you can imagine after 9 months of no income, she is struggling to reopen. I know a lot of folks are having a difficult time right now but hope that those that can will help repay Mary Ann for all she does for us. We have opened a gofundme for Mary Ann. Any support in helping us reach our goal would be greatly appreciated.
