Mary Ann Atkinson was a visual artist who resided in Austin, Texas. At age 29, Atkinson was diagnosed with Stage 4 metastatic cancer. Over the past decade, Atkinson undertook a healing sabbatical exploring the world far and wide - collecting, identifying, and photographing the evidence of life. In her latest series, "Everything Has a Shadow," Atkinson meditated on life and death by pairing artifacts such as fish teeth and even her own skin with modern female forms and colorful hand felted atoms - the smallest building units of our universe. Each custom shadow box - backed by her signature atmospheric blue - honors the perfect symbiosis between earth, sky, and the organisms throughout. The dimensionality of her work begs the observer to reach out and connect with the suspended remnants of our humanity and ecosystems.
With Mary Ann's passing, her family has decided to keep her collection intact, offering the world the opportunity to enjoy her work. Your contributions make the preservation of her work possible.
