Hi my name is Anne and together with Kathy Dahl we are fundraising to assist Marv's lifelong partner Emily in dealing with unexpected financial costs upon Marvin's untimely passing.
Marv Yakoweshen — forever known as “Marvelous Marv”, the name lovingly given by Gary Martin because, truth be told, Gary could never quite pronounce Marv’s last name — became family long before he officially joined Gary Martin’s Heavenly Blues Band. What started as a nickname turned into a legacy. Marv went on to be an integral part of the band for more than 25 years, anchoring its sound, spirit, and heart until his retirement. Beyond Heavenly Blues, Gary and Marv often performed duo sets, revealing a musical bond built on trust, listening, deep respect, and lasting brotherhood.
Marvelous Marv was quiet, sweet, and deeply kind — especially to young sax players, whom he mentored with patience and encouragement. He loved to laugh and was always ready with a well-timed joke, frequently catching bandmates off guard. A seeker and teacher, Marv, a Yogi Master, often shared meditation practices, was exceptionally well-read, and rarely without a book in hand. He thrived on deep conversations about nearly anything and everything, and he carried wisdom as gently as he carried humor.
An outstanding world travelled musician, Marv’s sax was always close — whether it was “The King” or his beloved “Selmer” horn. His sound was unmistakable: soulful, warm, and expressive, speaking straight to the heart. Wherever “Marvelous Marv” stood, music followed.
Today, we ask you to show your love and honor Marv’s life by supporting the GoFundMe for Marv’s lifelong partner Emily, giving her time to deal with funeral and immediate financial costs and time to heal . Your kindness will help carry forward the compassion, generosity, and spirit that Marv gave so freely to all the world.
In recent months, Marvin and Emily have already been facing financial hardship. In an act of generosity, they offered temporary shelter to a homeless Calgary musician — and were tragically robbed of their credit cards, personal identification, and banking information, leaving their accounts emptied. Just days after Marv’s untimely passing, someone unsuccessfully attempted to access his bank account.
Your support now means more than ever — it helps a heartbroken Emily, honors Marv’s kindness, and continues the love he gave so freely to others. We are truly gratefull for any support you can provide and ask that you please share.
Thank you Kathy Dahl for accepting the role of financial/banking advisor and for all the assistance you have provided to Emily.
