In 2006, my dad, Marty Ganser, was in a catastrophic car accident. He broke every bone in his face, was airlifted to a hospital for emergency surgery on his ruptured eyeball, had major damage done to the front of his brain, and was diagnosed with shaken brain syndrome from the impact. The traumatic brain injury prevented him from being able to drive or work ever again. He suffered most severely from balance issues and short term memory loss.
For nearly the last decade, his mental health has been slowly declining. Being able to clearly communicate has become more of a challenge. His physical health has also declined as his strength has decreased and his balance issues have worsened. With the bain injury and old age, he was diagnosed with Parkinson's and dementia within the past year.
Recently, my mom, Debbie Ganser, saw a more significant and rapid decline in both his physical and cognitive ability. She became seriously concerned when my dad was unable to use an eating utensil to feed himself, and when he was unable to remember basic things from his long-term memory. Because of this behavior, she brought him to the hospital. The doctors informed my mom that this cognitive decline is permanent, and that this is the time that she needed to make decisions in regards to permanent dementia care outside of the home.
Knowing my dad's health problems, my mom has always had full health insurance coverage for him, and she added a supplemental health plan. While we have been blessed to have been covered through Social Security Disability and insurance up to this point, we have now learned that the particular long-term dementia care that my dad needs may not be covered. This care is very expensive per month, and while we continue to seek out medical grant options, we would be very appreciative to any funds that can be raised here.
All money raised will go towards Marty Ganser's dementia care, and it will alleviate our family from serious financial hardship.
Right now my dad is at the Bethany Health Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota. This is a temporary facility that is covered through insurance because it is labeled as physical therapy treatment. We are so thankful for the time that this has provided us to raise money and make quality decisions in regards to my dad's permanent care, but he can only stay there for a maximum of 100 days. His first day there was Saturday, February 13, 2016. Come May 2016, our family needs to not only have made a quality decision about where the best facility is for our dad, but we also need the funds to pay for it.
