My nephew Marques was born with the heart defect TGA (Transposition of the Great Arteries). TGA forms during pregnancy. The Aorta and Pulmonary valves are essentially swapped, resulting in a heart that is incapable of pumping oxygen rich blood from the lungs to the body.
Babies with TGA have two separate blood flow circuits — one that circulates oxygen-poor blood from the body back to the body, and another that recirculates oxygen-rich blood from the lungs back to the lungs.
Marques was two weeks old when he had his initial open heart surgery to reverse the arteries.
For the past 14 years he has been able to live a normal active life. He enjoys hanging out with friends, playing basketball, video games, and camping and fishing with Grandma and Grandpa.
As he has grown, so has his heart. And over the last couple years he has been experiencing increasing episodes of shortness of breath, dizziness, and fainting. The doctors have discovered that his arteries are leaking and he is scheduled to have his second open heart surgery to replace both Aorta and Pulmonary arteries tomorrow.
The surgery is going to cause him to miss the remainder of his freshman year at Sauk Rapids and require my sister Danielle to miss two months of work while he recovers.
I'm starting this Go Fund Me page for my nephew and my sister, in order to help them get by in the coming weeks while Marques recovers from this major surgery.
