"You're such a great storyteller. Do you come by this naturally or did you learn it somewhere?"
I get this question a lot.
The answer is simple as my go-to response is always, "Oh, I got that from my uncle Mark."
Growing up, I'd sit on the edge of my seat while my godfather made people laugh out loud at any family function. He has an unparalleled ability to attract anyone and everyone in the room like a human magnet.
He's the best storyteller I know. He's also the hardest working person I've ever met.
But, in a whirlwind, he's had to share a story that hasn't been easy...
At a routine dental cleaning, his dentist said, "Mark, I don't like this spot on your right cheek. I'd like you to get it checked out."
Within weeks, Uncle Mark received the devastating stage 4 cancer diagnosis.
He underwent a grueling 12 hour surgery to replace his jaw (with a bone graft from his left fibula). Intense recovery and now 7 weeks of daily radiation.
If you're reading this, you know no family is ever prepared for the emotional and financial toll of cancer.
With medical expenses not covered by insurance, mouth and jaw rehab, extensive dental work from the surgery, as well as leg recovery (from the bone graft) and the state of healthcare in America, every appointment brings unexpected costs.
(Not to mention, he's unable to work as he relearns to eat and regain full use of his face and leg.)
My aunt Lisa has been a selfless caretaker, providing 24/7 support, as well as support from his sons, Matthew and Zachary. As much as Uncle Mark would rather fight this within his small circle, I knew it was time to ask for support.
OUR ASK:
If Mark Romano has ever made you laugh, smile, or brightened your day; if he's ever taken a moment to "see" you or you've shared a special moment with him, then we need you.
Whether it's a prayer, message, or helping to offset the costs (there is no amount too small) associated with this brutal + life altering illness.
Our goal is to cover the following out-of-pocket expenses including:
- rehabilitation
- dental work
- physical therapy
- as well as extra caretaking costs at home.
Anything past the goal, Uncle Mark would like donated to cancer research.
On behalf of our family, we thank you for coming together as a community to help Uncle Mark fight this battle.
With your support, he'll get to tell a better story...this time next year.
